About Us

Phi Eta Sigma was founded on March 22, 1923, at the University of Illinois. It is the oldest and largest freshman honors society, and is open to university students in all disciplines. Since its founding, more than 1,100,000 members have been inducted. Founded in 1927, the University of Pittsburgh became home to the 41st chapter of Phi Eta Sigma. In total, there are 378 campuses across the United States that house a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma.

Membership is open to all University of Pittsburgh freshmen who fit the three criteria for eligibility, including a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 at the end of any full-time curricular period; a normal academic load acceptable towards a bachelor's degree; and a class rank in the top twenty percent of their class. Membership is open to all students who fit the three criteria during either semester of their freshmen year. Eligible freshmen can expect an offer of membership after the end of the academic year and will be inducted the following fall semester.
